Two dancers. Two different energies. One signed, and the paper itself has texture you can feel.
This is a set of two vintage lithograph ballet dancer watercolor prints — a male dancer and a female dancer, both artist-signed "Marchaude," printed on textured cellulose watercolor paper. Published by V.A.P. Co., Inc. Catalog numbers 1001M (large) and 1000S (small), part of a wider ballerina series. Circa 1950s–1960s. One set available. Unframed.
The prints are distinguished by their paper — genuine textured watercolor stock that gives the prints a warmth and tactility unusual in the advertisement print market. The colors remain vivid and unfaded; the borders show the small tears and wear typical of ephemera of this age, all of which disappear entirely behind a mat and frame. The artist Marchaude has not been further identified, which is consistent with the commercial illustration world of the mid-century where pseudonyms and anonymity were common — but the quality of the work speaks clearly enough on its own.
Display them as a pair — male and female, complementary poses — or separately. Both frame beautifully at their respective sizes.
A wonderful piece for a ballet art collector, a dance studio or home studio, a lover of mid-century illustration, or anyone whose wall deserves a little grace.
